Enzymatic polymorphism of genetic diversity in cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) accessions in Côte d’Ivoire

ABSTRACT

 

Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) is the second food crops in Côte d’Ivoire, after yam, with a total production of 2.41 million tons. However, the abandonment of local varieties by farmers in addition to the action of bush fires, pests and diseases induced loss of genetic material. To overcome such loss, a collection was set at Centre National de Recherche Agronomique (CNRA) to help conserving cassava genetic resources. Plant material consisting of 327 accessions, allowed identifying high yielding genotypes that are recommended to farmers nationwide. Indeed morphological characterization was carried out, but any enzymatic and molecular characterization was performed. The current study aims at enabling an efficient exploitation of the collection. Specifically, it aims at assessing collection diversity and pointing out repeated accessions. Enzymatic characterization was performed using enzymatic descriptors : acid phosphatase (PAC), Esterase (EST), Malate dehydrogenase (MDH) and Phosphoglucose isomerase (PGI). Enzymatic polymorphism of the collection was determined and characterized and identified duplicates through heterozygous alleles from enzymatic systems used, excepted EST system.
