Abstract
A field experiment was carried out during 2014 growing season to study the effect of foliar sprayed with the aqueous and ethanolic Moringa oleifera leaf extracts at rates of 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 % on growth, yield and nutrients uptake ( N, P, K, Ca, Mg and Fe) of spinach plants (Spinacia Oleracea L.) Results showed that spinach plants treated with four concentrations of aqueous and ethanolic Moringa extracts (1, 2, 3 and 4%) showed significant increase in plant height, leaf area, fresh and dry weight, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, carotenoids, ascorbic acid, phenols and nutrients uptake (N, P, K, Ca, Mg and Fe) compared to those untreated control plants. Spraying the ethanolic moringa extract at different rates show favorable effects on growth parameters, yield, photosynthetic pigments and nutrients uptake as compared to the aqueous extract. The application of 1% to 4% of aqueous and ethanolic Moringa extracts gave increase of fresh weight which ranged from 126 – 457 % and 237 – 620%, respectively. The study recommends the application of both extracts at 4%. Thus, it is concluded that Moringa oleifera leaf extract can be recommended to be used effectively by famers as a bio-organic fertilizer for various crops due to its high productivity, high nutritive value, antioxidant effect, easy preparation, low cost and environmentally friendly nature.
Key words: Moringa oleifera leaf extract, Photosynthetic pigments, nutrients uptake, spinach plants.
